Pre-carriage; on-board requirements
Question: Name: S.Prabhu

I have a question regarding Pre-carriage. What is the purpose of giving the details of Pre-carriage on the B/L?

Let us taken an example.

LC calls for Port to port B/L covering shipment from Chennai to Felixstowe.

Shipped B/L presented shows POL and POD as per the LC and it evidences Pre-carriage by vessel-x which is different from Ocean vessel. In this case should we require an onboard notation?

Answer (from Kim Christensen) Dear S.Prabhu

This issue has been heavily debated the last months - and the conclusion I have reached is that the following UCP 500 rule still applies, i.e.:

If the bill of lading indicates a place of receipt or taking in charge different from the port of loading, the on board notation must also include the port of loading stipulated in the Credit and the name of the vessel on which the goods have been loaded, even if they have been loaded on the vessel named in the bill of lading. This provision also applies whenever loading on board the vessel is indicated by pre-printed wording on the bill of lading...

I do think that in order to answer your question with any kind of precision - more details are required - preferably a copy of the B/L presented.

I hope this helps you.

Best regards

Kim
