GEARING UP FOR UCP 600 IMPLEMENTATION

Zahoor Dattu Outlines and Recommends a Strategy for Implementation Planning

[LC VIEWS Newsletter N0.76; December 2006]

Editor’s Note: Zahoor Dattu, a well known LC specialist in Middle East, does the spadework to outline a strategy for implementation of UCP 600. You add meat and bones to the strategy to make it relevant and purposeful, according to your requirements . Zahoor Dattu has told you what to do. How to do, this you have to decide. For example, the strategy shows training as one step toward implementation. But whether training should be online or offline, whether offline training should be on- the- job or off- the- job, this you have to decide keeping in view your policies and resources. The strategy could help you plan UCP 600 implementation. We highlight 3 essentials of his 7-step strategy:

Implementation -- a necessity as one cannot live without it

Reassess the current risks with the new UCP 600

Review impact of UCP 600 on systems

7 -Step Strategy

UCP 600 is currently under review by the Banking Commission and would replace UCP 500 on 1st July, 2007 (i.e. 7 1/2 months from now). After its coming into force it would have the following significance/impact and accordingly the bank has to gear up for that.

6. Policies:

• UCP 500 or 600 (for sometime old transactions would still be governed under UCP 500 despite the lapse of effective date of UCP 600)

• UCP 500 or 600 or ISP 98

7. Systems:

• Review Impact of UCP 600 on systems and Swift (currently swift is working to develop MT 734 based on the UCP 600 standards.
